You’ll Never Know You Have Bacterial Vaginosis Until You’ve Seen These Symptoms!

I know that most of us never heard about Bacterial Vaginosis before, but it is by far the most common genital infection! What do I mean? This condition has been known as a “silent” infection because majority of the women who have it, don’t even know they have it! So what is it about? Hmmm. Before we begin, I want you to keep in mind that we have to say the word “vagina” without hesitation, without discomfort, or embarrassment because in reality, the reason why we are not aware of our vagina’s needs is because we do not want to talk about it.

So again, what is bacterial vaginosis? Bacterial Vaginosis occurs when lactobacilli (these are microorganisms that inhibit the growth of bad bacteria in our vagina) is replaced by a proliferation of harmful bacteria. So where do we get it? The answer is not limited to douching or having more than one sex partner, it can also be due to smoking, use of intrauterine device or recent antibiotic use. By the way, BV is not a sexually transmitted disease but it can be exacerbated by sex. And although it is not dangerous, this condition makes us more susceptible to HIV and uterine infection, and its symptoms are pretty disturbing..

Having a fluid discharge actually helps clean our vaginas. So we don’t have to worry about this normal excretion unless it is other than the thin clear or milky-white fluid that of course, odorless. The “abnormal” vaginal discharge that we are talking about has a thicker consistency and unpleasant odor. The appearance could be white or gray, sometimes it can also be yellow or green. It really varies from person to person. But what’s for sure, it has a foul fishy odor.

It is pretty normal to have a slightly acidic scent because of the presence of lactic acid in the vagina, so we have nothing to be embarrassed about. However, if there is an overgrowth of unwanted bacteria, our vaginas tend to produce a more intense foul odor, which is an indication of bacterial vaginosis.

Always remember that our vaginas shouldn’t feel itchy at all. So if it is itching, there is a higher chance that you have bacterial vaginosis. But don’t forget to always go to your doctor to have it checked, since itching can be a symptom to other vaginal problems.

Just like the skin, our vagina needs to have a balanced pH in order to function well. Let’s state some fact, the normal vaginal pH is actually between 3.8 to 4.5, meaning it is in the acidic range. Why do we have to keep it this way? The acidic environment is actually like a protective barrier of our vaginas against infection and irritation, because unwanted bacteria proliferates in a more basic environment. So let’s take the opportunity to reduce the chance of these bacteria to develop and grow. And not to mention, they are responsible for the abnormal discharge, odor, itching and other vaginal discomforts. I will highly recommend that you use a certified organic feminine care products to help you solve the problem.
